Big Changes For a Small Yard

by Bill Spellbring, Landscape Designer

Can you say “S’mores”?

This small backyard was due for a makeover, lacking interest and not meeting the needs for its owners and family. Teufel’s custom residential design/ build team helped bring the changes to life.

The old back yard was plain and lacked interest and color. The owners also wanted to introduce the idea of a fire pit.

Now, this simple centerpiece is the gathering spot for the family. The fire pit is constructed of Cottage Stone wall blocks, matching those in an existing wall. That same wall was raised and a cap installed, making it a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the fire. Iron Mountain flagstone paving provides casual, yet elegant flooring that complements the wall blocks.

The final transformation of this back yard includes a fresh carpet of a new sod lawn. Plantings of Hydrangea, Spiraea, New Zealand Flax, Daylilies, and Hosta provide summer interest, while a large Lilac installed near the existing patio entices bypassers with its springtime fragrance. Additional plantings of Emerald Green Arborvitae will enhance the privacy and year round enjoyment of this back yard retreat.
