The Big Blow

Unusual Weather Event passes through Oregon 6/4/09, Causing significant damage to the landscape.

Even with advanced warnings from meteorologists, there was little any of us could do in advance of the weather front that passed through Oregon recently.  But why did we sustain more damage to our landscapes this time rather than from a typical wind storm?

The answer is timing.  Trees flush with new growth, heavy leaf canopies, and more than adequate moisture reserve still available in the soil were the perfect recipe for horticultural disaster.  Limbs broke out of trees, branches cracked and bowed over after receiving the “one – two punch” of wind and rain.  New delicate growth on shrubs was wind beaten and frayed.  Storm litter is everywhere as the wind collected anything that could come loose and carried it to a new location.

Of course, those trees and shrubs that had been regularly maintained and had their canopies thinned out were way ahead of the game during this event.

But what about those of us who were not prepared?  Teufel Landscape Maintenance was put into action before the storm had even subsided.  Our route crews were back out visiting those sites where 24 hour operations are critical.  During this coming week every site will be visited for storm damage clean-up.

The lesson to be learned is that annual inspections and routine tree work should not be put off.  Our staff arborists are here to answer any questions you have about the health and care for one of your most valuable assets, the trees on your property.  Contact your Teufel Landscape Maintenance Account Manager to arrange an appointment.
