If Dogs Dream...

Cheryl Cone, a long time Teufel team member and incredibly talented landscape professional, is  the driving force behind our featured project this month, "If dogs dream ..." I know you will enjoy reading about Cheryl and her very special project.

If dogs dream....

... would they ever imagine this as their dog run?

Probably not - but being able to spend quality time with the family pet was a factor in moving ahead with this challenging landscape renovation in the West Hills of Portland.

No question, the steep terrain from the deck down to the lower yard left little useable space for any activity. Cheryl Cone (see Team Approach below) had worked with the homeowners previously on their front yard, so naturally she was their first choice to spearhead this ambitious next phase.

Flagstone paving was carefully fit, allowing the smallest
cracks to be planted with Creeping and Wooly Thyme.

The Teufel team of skilled landscape professionals was tasked with taming the sloping yard. Limited access and tight quarters added to the complexity. Equipment was used when possible, but much of the work was done by hand. In the end, a number of benefits were realized once the much needed level area was established.

Of course increasing outdoor entertainment space was an original goal. The ornamental screen, custom built by Teufel craftsmen, provides the sense of enclosure that this space previously lacked, helping to create the tranquil oasis that the owners were looking for. By incorporating night lighting, this space is enjoyed long after the sun has set. Plantings were selected for fragrance and to provide year around interest. When viewed from the inside, this extension of the living area literally draws you through the house.

Once outside you are greeted with the playful splash from this specially selected boulder that doubles as both an artistic focal point and creative water-feature.

A large crane parked on the street below was used to place the signature boulder within the water feature. Extra care is taken to thread the water fill pipe through the center drilled hole.

If dogs do dream, spending time in this very special place might just be at the top of their list.

Team Approach

It is probably not polite to bring up the actual number of years that Cheryl Cone has been in the green industry. Nor would it be kind to label her as a pioneer of modern day landscaping. But it is safe to say that during her professional career Cheryl has been involved in many of the most creative and outstanding personal landscape spaces throughout Oregon and SW Washington.

What is her key to success? One simple word - Listening. In dealing with literally hundreds of clients over the years, Cheryl has developed the ability to ask the right questions. The answers help her establish the scope of work and ultimate expectations. Drawing on her experience, Cheryl then develops a realistic budget. But before the ground has been broken, Cheryl next turns her attention to the details, because she knows that the success of every one of her project is in the details. Taking a look at her featured project, we couldn't agree more.
