FLOOD CONTROL MEASURES FOR GREEN RIVER VALLEY

Residents, businesses and farms below the Howard Hanson Dam in the Green River Valley should prepare now for a higher risk of flooding.

The higher risk is due to water seeping more rapidly through an earthen bank next to the dam after record high water last winter. Until the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) can make repairs, it must limit the amount of flood water it stores behind the dam.  If heavy and prolonged rain occurs this flood season (roughly October through March), many homes and businesses in the valley that don't typically see flood water--including parts of Auburn, Kent, Renton, South Seattle and Tukwila--could be flooded.

Teufel Landscape owns and operates on property next to the Green River in Kent. We are in the same situation as everyone that resides in the flood area. We are looking to, not only protect ourselves, but also use our expertise to help our neighbors during this time of uncertainty.

A Memo From the Teufel Family

Recent events have provided the opportunity for us to pause and reflect on our history. Would we have done anything different?

2009 has been one of those periods that most of us will remember for years to come. Even with the challenging economy, here at Teufel we continue to be involved in so many of the landmark projects of this year. A major new software development campus in Redmond, Washington; the latest addition to the Light Rail system in Portland; and to cap it off, at the new Tacoma Goodwill facility Teufel was first in the United States to install a Vertical Garden (green wall) designed by world renowned French botanist, Patric Blanc. These are just a few of the many projects that have kept us busy in 2009.

When you are hard at work, perhaps there is little time left to ponder how things might have been different. Here's to our future - and many more exciting projects to work on together!

A Memo from the Teufel Family

Why launch a news-memo now?  We are already bombarded with news from all directions: print, broadcast, word of mouth, internet and now Twitter.  Unfortunately, most news that we receive is about things we have little control over, may not be the whole story, and tends to be slanted to the negative.  In these troubled economic times it is important to know what is really going on and not to rely only on superficial media reports.

Our goal is to share with you things that are going on here at Teufel, how we are responding to ever changing demands (new government regulations and what they mean for all of us in the construction, property management, and nursery industries), and to present creative solutions to some of our daily challenges.

Visit our new website and hit the "Latest News" button in the upper left corner for live updates.  We even have our own blog page.  Could Twitter be next?
Ahh ... I don't think so.

VERTICAL GARDENS

A NEW TREND IN THE URBAN LANDSCAPE
(by Mike Bianchi)

In August Teufel Landscape of Washington installed one of the first “vertical gardens” in the United States. The garden was installed for Tacoma Goodwill-Milgard Work Opportunity Center in downtown Tacoma, Washington.  Goodwill commissioned French artist Patrick Blanc to design and oversee the construction of the garden.  Mr. Blanc has a 25 year history in designing and installing such gardens throughout Europe and Asia but he has worked on only a handful of such gardens in the United States.
